A teenage boy who was in foster care is now in adult jail, accused of attempting to kill the man who allegedly assaulted his biological mother in South Miami-Dade County.
According to a police report, Guadalupe Miranda, 36, told officers she had been severely beaten, leaving her bruised. Following the attack, her two children, enraged by the incident, reportedly sought revenge.
Surveillance footage captured the events of Sept. 28 at The Park Motel, located at 600 S. Krome Ave. in Homestead. Police say Miranda arrived in a pickup truck with her 16-year-old son, Leonel Zapet, her daughter, and Zapet’s girlfriend. Witnesses identified Zapet as the gunman who shot the alleged attacker in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.
Police arrested Zapet on Sept. 29 at a foster home in Homestead. The victim, whose condition remains critical, was initially treated at Baptist Health Homestead Hospital before being airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center.
Prosecutors charged Zapet, who turned 17 on Nov. 1, in adult court. He now faces two felony charges: second-degree attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jail records show he was transferred to the Metrowest Detention Center on Thursday, where he remains in custody.
Zapet’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch.
