18-Year-Old Faces Murder Charge in Florida City Gun Violence Incident

An 18-year-old man, Kendy Javier Torres Figueras, has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting near a Days Inn in Florida City on Thursday. Miami-Dade Police are now leading the investigation, which was initially handled by Florida City Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:41 a.m. when Florida City officers responded to a gunshot detection alert in the area of Palm Drive and U.S. 1. Upon arrival, they discovered a man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson South, where he was pronounced dead.

According to investigators, the victim had been traveling westbound on Southwest 344th Street as a passenger in a Ford F-150 truck when the truck came to a stop in traffic alongside a 1994 Toyota Corolla driven by Figueras. Surveillance footage revealed that Figueras armed himself with a firearm and pointed it at the victim.

Police reports state that the victim exited the truck and confronted Figueras, reportedly saying, “Stop me.” Figueras then allegedly fired multiple shots, striking the victim in the torso. After the shooting, Figueras fled westbound on Southwest 344th Street.

The confrontation was captured on surveillance video, which proved critical to the investigation. Additionally, the truck’s driver and front passenger—identified as the victim’s relatives—confirmed Figueras as their nephew and provided investigators with further information.

Later that day, Figueras was arrested and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The investigation is ongoing.
