According to Newsweek , A range of bread products from Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse has been recalled due to the presence of an undeclared allergen—sesame—prompting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a Class I recall. This classification, the highest level of recall, indicates that there is a “reasonable probability” that consuming or being exposed to these products could lead to serious health risks or even death.
The recall affects the following Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse products:
- Hawaiian Hamburger Buns
- White Pullman Bread
- 100% Whole Wheat Pullman Bread
- Whole Grain Dinner Rolls
- Texas Toast
- Whole Grain White Hot Dog Buns
These items were distributed in 12 states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. The affected products have a date of September 13, 2024, or earlier.
Sesame is one of the nine major allergens in the U.S., and its presence was not declared on the packaging of the affected products. The FDA warns that exposure to undeclared allergens can cause severe allergic reactions, including gastrointestinal issues, skin irritations, and even life-threatening anaphylaxis. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing, and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.
Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, requires immediate medical attention, as it can cause a significant drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulty, and loss of consciousness.
The FDA advises consumers who may have purchased these products to dispose of them immediately. Those who experience an allergic reaction or illness should notify the FDA and local health departments, keeping the packaging and any remaining product for potential investigations.
Allergen contamination remains a leading cause of food recalls, accounting for nearly 40% of recalls issued by the FDA and the Food Safety and Inspection Service between 2020 and 2024, according to a study by Traceone, a regulatory compliance company.
