According to The Sun , Americans may be eligible to receive thousands of dollars in a one-time distribution following a recent settlement in a class action lawsuit related to a data breach.
The lawsuit was filed against UnitedLex, a legal data analytics provider, after cybercriminals gained access to its servers, contractors, and staff, potentially compromising sensitive information. Plaintiffs claimed that the breach exposed financial account numbers, Social Security numbers, and personal details of beneficiaries, contractors, and employees.
While UnitedLex has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the company agreed to settle the case with a $1.3 million payout to resolve the claims and avoid further legal expenses.
Eligibility for Settlement
To qualify for a portion of the settlement, individuals must meet certain criteria:
- They must be current or former beneficiaries, contractors, or employees of UnitedLex.
- Their personal information must have been impacted by the March 2023 data breach.
Those who are automatically eligible should have received a notice via mail or email informing them that their information was compromised in the breach. The notice would have included a Claim ID and PIN for filing a claim.
How to File a Claim
Eligible individuals can file a claim online using the Claim ID and PIN provided in their notice on the settlement website. Those without their Claim ID and PIN can still file by using an alternative option on the website. Claim forms are also available for download in the “Case Documents” section of the settlement website, and completed forms can be mailed to the settlement administrator.
The deadline to file a claim is fast approaching: November 12, 2024. The opportunity to exclude or object to the settlement has already passed, with the deadline for those actions being September 23, 2024.

Settlement Benefits and Payment
Those who qualify for the settlement may receive a variety of benefits, including free credit monitoring, identity theft protection services, and reimbursement for expenses related to the breach. Individuals who can provide valid documentation of expenses such as bank fees, travel costs, credit-related fees, or damages from identity theft may receive up to $15,000 in reimbursements.
Additionally, claimants are eligible for a $500 payment to compensate for time lost while dealing with the consequences of the data breach.
Any remaining funds in the settlement pot after payments to qualified claimants will be distributed on a pro-rata basis.
Claimants who enroll in the settlement benefits will have access to free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services until July 11, 2027. UnitedLex has also committed to improving its cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches.
A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for December 10, 2024.
Other Upcoming Settlements
In addition to this settlement, there are other ongoing data breach settlements with approaching deadlines. For instance, a settlement involving an accounts receivable collection services company is offering $100 payments to eligible claimants who file by November 12. Similarly, eligible claimants in a Paycom settlement have just hours left to file for a $4,200 payout, with the deadline for submission being November 7.
