According to Newsweek , A range of bread products has been recalled due to the presence of an unlabeled allergen, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Perfection Bakeries, based in Indiana, voluntarily recalled Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse products in September due to undeclared sesame seeds. The recall has now been classified as a Class I risk by the FDA, indicating a high level of danger. A Class I recall is issued when there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to a product could result in “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The affected products include:
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse Hawaiian Hamburger Buns
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse White Pullman Bread
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse 100% Whole Wheat Pullman Bread
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse Whole Grain Dinner Rolls
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse Texas Toast
- Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse Whole Grain White Hot Dog Buns
These items were distributed in 12 states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. The recall applies to products with a production date of September 13, 2024, or earlier.
Sesame is one of the nine major food allergens recognized by the FDA, and its presence in these bread products has not been declared on the label. The other eight allergens include soybeans, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, milk, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts. Food allergies can range from mild symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort and skin irritation to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can be fatal.
An allergic reaction to sesame may include symptoms like hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, and dizziness. Anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction, requires immediate medical attention, including hospitalization.
The FDA urges individuals who experience symptoms after consuming a product they believe to be free from allergens to report the issue to the agency and local health departments. This can help prevent further illnesses. Consumers are also advised to keep the product packaging for investigation purposes.
Research by Traceone, a regulatory compliance firm, found that allergens are one of the leading causes of food recalls. Between 2020 and 2024, nearly 40% of recalls issued by the FDA and the Food Safety and Inspection Service were due to unintended allergens in products.
