Bay Area residents hoping for relief from the persistent fall heat wave are in for more bad news. The National Weather Service has extended the heat alerts currently in effect, pushing back the expiration time for the excessive heat warning and heat advisory from 11 p.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Saturday.
The excessive heat warning covers several areas, including the North Bay interior and coastal ranges, the East Bay, the South Bay, eastern San Mateo County, and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Inland locations may experience sweltering temperatures reaching as high as 108 degrees during the remainder of this heat wave.
Meanwhile, a heat advisory remains in effect for San Francisco, the North Bay valleys, coastal areas of the North Bay, the Peninsula, and Monterey Bay. Along the coast, temperatures could soar to 95 degrees, with downtown San Francisco projected to hit 87 degrees.
For those eagerly awaiting a cooldown, meteorologist Rob Mayeda from NBC Bay Area advises patience, stating that “any substantial cooling” is not expected until Monday or Tuesday of next week.
As the heat continues, the weather service reminds the public to take necessary precautions: never leave people or pets in vehicles, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and stay hydrated while taking cooling breaks throughout this prolonged heat spell.
