According to The Sun, Two popular discount chains, Dirt Cheap and a Dollar Tree rival, have filed for bankruptcy, resulting in the permanent closure of all their locations. This decision opens the door for last-minute bargain shopping for eager customers.
Final Sales at Dirt Cheap
Known for offering extreme value deals, Dirt Cheap has announced it will close all its stores, including two locations in Tennessee. Shoppers in Murfreesboro and Smyrna now have a final opportunity to take advantage of closing sales before the stores shut their doors for good.
The bankruptcy filing occurred in Delaware, indicating a difficult period for the retailer. While the exact closure date remains uncertain, reports suggest that stores may close by the end of the year.
Locations Affected
Dirt Cheap once operated over 60 locations across eight states, primarily in the southern U.S., including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. All nine stores in Louisiana will also be shutting down, along with 29 locations in Mississippi and five in Tennessee.
As reported by Nexstar, a store near the company’s headquarters in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is already conducting a closing-down sale, with significant discounts of 70% to 90% off across the entire store.
Deep Discounts for Shoppers
In addition to the Hattiesburg store, a location in Greenwood, Mississippi, is also offering deep discounts. Shoppers can find items like clothes and shoes for under $5, with sales promoted on the company’s Facebook page.
The parent company of Dirt Cheap, Channel Control Merchants, has indicated that the chain has been facing significant financial challenges. Jeffrey Martin, the newly appointed chief restructuring officer, cited competition from major retailers as a contributing factor to the company’s struggles.

Customer Reactions to the Closure
The news of Dirt Cheap’s closure has prompted an outpouring of disappointment from loyal customers. Many have expressed their sadness on social media, with one customer stating, “I hate this! I love shopping at Dirt Cheap,” while another reminisced, “Used to be my favorite place to go searching for a deal.” The closure has left fans of the discount retailer heartbroken, as Dirt Cheap specialized in selling items returned to major retailers like Target and Macy’s at reduced prices.
Other Retail Closures in the Industry
Dirt Cheap is not the only retailer facing significant store closures. Macy’s plans to close 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026 as part of its growth strategy. Additionally, reports have indicated that hundreds of Big Lots discount outlets and 7-Eleven convenience stores are also set to close, with more than 400 7-Eleven locations across the nation shutting their doors.
Despite these closures, company representatives have stated that they will continue to open new outlets in line with customer demand. A spokesperson explained, “We made the decision to optimize a number of non-core assets that do not fit into our growth strategy,” as reported by Retail Dive.
