2024 Marine League Football Predictions: Top Teams in LA City Section

As October kicks off, league play is in full swing across Southern California, especially in the CIF Southern Section and LA City Section. With the start of league action, SBLive is taking a closer look at the top leagues in each section to predict champions and league standings.

The regular season wraps up in Week 10, with the final games scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1. Playoff pairings will be announced that weekend, and the first round of playoffs begins on Friday, Nov. 8. Championship games are slated for Nov. 29 and 30.

MARINE LEAGUE

The Marine League stands out as the premier league in the City Section this fall. All five teams are strong contenders for the Open Division playoffs, but predicting a winner is tough due to the league’s competitive balance.

Each team has a different style of play. Gardena boasts a dynamic running game, while San Pedro and Banning rely on traditional, hard-hitting ground attacks. Carson is a balanced squad with a solid defense, and Narbonne showcases explosive speed on the outside.

Whichever team survives the Marine League gauntlet is likely to claim the City Section Open Division title.

Predicted Finish:

5. Gardena (5-0)
The Panthers haven’t faced top-tier competition yet. While their win over Crespi was impressive, it likely reflects more on Crespi’s struggles than on Gardena’s strength. Running back Xavier Grant is an All-City player candidate, but Gardena will need more offensive versatility to succeed in this league.

4. Carson (3-3)
The Colts lost their standout player, Jerry Misaalefua, to graduation, and his absence is noticeable. The team is rebuilding with a young sophomore quarterback and veteran running back Kameryn Hurst. On defense, Troy Taulua and Xavier Allen lead the way, but Carson lacks the experience it had last season.

3. Banning (5-0)
The Pilots are a disciplined team capable of upsetting anyone in the league. Their biggest asset is their star power, with Steven Perez being a game-changer on both sides of the ball. Banning’s top players have the ability to carry them to victories.

2. San Pedro (5-1)
The Pirates are a formidable team with a strong running game and a capable passing attack. Head coach Corey Walsh is laser-focused, knowing this season presents a unique opportunity. San Pedro is tough and determined, with their sights set on the Open Division title. A crucial matchup against Narbonne looms on October 11.

1. Narbonne (4-2)
Narbonne tested itself with a difficult nonleague schedule, including games against Los Alamitos and Cathedral. They remain undefeated against City Section opponents, dominating those matchups. Quarterback Jaden O’Neal, committed to Oklahoma, leads a talented group of college-bound prospects, with freshman running back Derrick Jackson adding power to the backfield. SMU-bound linebacker Mark Iheanachor anchors the defense.
