A 25-year-old Bay Area man, David Sanchez, is in custody on suspicion of murdering his father and leaving the body in a dumpster last week, according to police. The investigation commenced on Wednesday evening after family members expressed concern for a 58-year-old man who had failed to show up for work that day and was unresponsive to their phone calls.
When Hayward police conducted a welfare check on the 2000 block of American Avenue, they received no response after knocking on the door. A records check revealed that Sanchez was associated with the residence. Since Sanchez is on probation with a search clause, officers entered the building without a warrant and discovered evidence of a homicide.
The following day, Oakland police contacted Hayward authorities to inform them that Sanchez was in custody on an unrelated matter. While in Oakland, Sanchez reportedly made comments that raised concerns about his father’s welfare, prompting officers to alert Hayward police.
After being interviewed by Hayward detectives, Sanchez allegedly confessed that his father’s body was in a dumpster in Union City. A subsequent search on the 33000 block of Central Avenue led to the discovery of the man’s body. Hayward police have not yet released the victim’s name, but confirmed he is Sanchez’s father.
Sanchez is being held at Santa Rita Jail on a charge of first-degree murder, with his arraignment scheduled for Tuesday. He is not eligible for bail. This incident marks the 13th homicide in Hayward this year.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” the Hayward Police Department stated in a press release. “Anyone with information related to the homicide is asked to call Detective Navas at 510-293-7176.”
