New Costco Store in San Jose Pending Final Approval
A significant new Costco store has received preliminary approval and is currently awaiting the final green light from city officials. If this approval comes through as expected, the upcoming location will be the sixth Costco store in San Jose, making it the city with the highest number of Costco locations in the United States.
As of September 16, 2024, there are 619 Costco stores across the U.S., with California leading the way with 139 locations, accounting for approximately 22% of all Costco stores nationwide.
Community Concerns
According to an October 1 report from Eladelantado.com, while the San Jose Planning Commission has already given the project a nod by certifying the environmental impact report, there is still considerable opposition from some community members. The new Costco is proposed to be situated near Prospect High School and an assisted living facility, raising concerns about increased traffic and safety.
Despite the anticipated creation of up to 300 new jobs and the potential for an economic boost for the city, local residents are pushing back against the store’s development. This conflict has led to an ongoing debate with city officials who support the new location.
