Big Changes Ahead: Walmart to Enhance Prescription and Medication Refills at All 4,600 Stores
According to The Sun, Walmart is raising the bar for customer convenience with a significant change set to roll out across all its 4,600 stores by January 2025. The retail giant announced the launch of a nationwide same-day pharmacy delivery service, allowing customers to integrate prescription medications with general merchandise into a single order.
Nationwide Availability
This new service will be available at all Walmart locations with pharmacies, aiming to reach millions of customers in 49 states. Currently, the program is live in six states—Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Nevada, South Carolina, and Wisconsin—and is projected to be accessible to 86% of U.S. households.
With this initiative, customers can have their prescriptions delivered alongside everyday items such as groceries and household essentials, providing a streamlined shopping experience.
Meeting Customer Demand
Walmart’s new Pharmacy Delivery service caters to both new prescriptions and refills. The company’s extensive network of nearly 4,600 stores enables efficient delivery, particularly benefiting families, seniors, and individuals with chronic conditions who require timely access to medications.
Kevin Host, Walmart U.S. Senior Vice President of Pharmacy, stated, “Our extensive footprint across the nation, combined with our deep expertise in pharmacy, uniquely positions us to make a profound impact in the communities we serve.” He emphasized that this new offering not only improves customer service but also allows Walmart’s pharmacies to focus on high-touch health services.
Seamless Ordering and Delivery Options
Customers can access the Pharmacy Delivery service through the Walmart app or website, making it easy to order medications, groceries, and household items in one seamless transaction.
Walmart offers various delivery options, including:
- Same-Day Scheduled Delivery: Customers can select a time that best fits their schedule.
- On-Demand and Express Delivery: Expected soon, these options will enable customers to receive prescriptions within hours or, in some cases, as quickly as 30 minutes.
The service applies to both new and existing prescriptions, with insurance coverage processed just as it would be in-store. For Walmart+ members, the service is free, while non-members will incur a standard delivery fee of $9.95.
Commitment to Safety
Walmart emphasizes safety by securely packaging medications in tamper-evident materials and ensuring prescriptions are verified by licensed pharmacists. Customers can track their orders in real-time and receive photo confirmation upon delivery, providing peace of mind.

Tom Ward, Executive Vice President and Chief eCommerce Officer for Walmart U.S., remarked, “If you’re sick, we can deliver the necessary medicine along with everything else you need to feel better: cough drops, a heating pad, blanket, and orange juice.”
Updated Return Policy
In addition to the new pharmacy delivery service, Walmart has introduced a new return policy. From October 1 through December 31, 2024, all items purchased in-store or online can be returned until January 31, 2025. This extended return window will be automatically updated on shoppers’ listings, along with general returns advice.
Amazon previously offered a similar policy during the pandemic, allowing a four-month return window, while this year, Amazon’s return window runs from November 1 to December 31, 2024. Apple brand products purchased from Amazon must be returned by January 15, 2025.
Although wide return windows are generally not favored by sellers, they are offered to boost shopper satisfaction, even for items like Halloween costumes that may be returned after New Year’s.
