SSI Recipients to Receive Two Checks This November: What to Expect in December
Some Social Security beneficiaries may notice an unusual adjustment in their payment schedule next month: an extra Supplemental Security Income (SSI) check is scheduled for November. This change might not surprise those closely following the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) 2024 timetable, which outlines payment dates throughout the year. However, for recipients accustomed to a monthly payment schedule, this adjustment may cause some confusion.
Why Are SSI Recipients Getting Two Checks in November?
The reason SSI recipients will receive two checks in November is due to a simple quirk in the calendar. SSI benefits, which provide financial assistance to low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities, are typically distributed on the first business day of each month. However, since December 1 falls on a Sunday this year, the SSA will issue the December payments on the preceding Friday.
As a result, SSI checks will be distributed on the following dates in November:
- Friday, November 1
- Friday, November 29
AARP explains that while the SSA distributes SSI benefits, it does not fund them directly. SSI is financed by the U.S. Treasury and state-level supplements, unlike Social Security benefits, which are funded primarily by income taxes.
Eligibility for SSI Benefits
SSI is designed to assist older individuals and those with disabilities who fall below a certain income threshold. To qualify for SSI benefits, individuals must meet specific criteria, including:
- Having little or no income.
- Having little or no resources.
- Being aged 65 or older, or having a disability or blindness.
For 2024, the maximum monthly benefit for an individual is $943, while couples may receive up to $1,415 if both qualify. It’s important to note that SSI benefits differ from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on work history and contributions to Social Security through income taxes.
November Social Security Payment Schedule
The SSA publishes its yearly payment schedules well in advance. Recipients can also start planning for next year, as the 2025 calendar has already been released. For typical Social Security retirement benefits in November, payments will be distributed as follows:
- Wednesday, November 13: Birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- Wednesday, November 20: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- Wednesday, November 27: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.
Streamlined SSI Application Process Coming Soon
In addition to the payment schedule changes, the SSA recently announced a new, simplified process for applying for SSI benefits. This new online system, called iClaim, will feature straightforward, plain-language questions aimed at speeding up the application process for both applicants and claims processors.
While the new system will begin rolling out in December, not all applicants will have immediate access. The SSA indicated that the first phase will primarily serve first-time applicants aged 18 to nearly 65 who have never been married and are applying concurrently for Social Security benefits and SSI. A second phase to expand access to all applicants is planned for 2025.
