Health Risks Associated with Listeria

The FDA warns that Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

While symptoms in healthy individuals may be short-term, including high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Additional Recalls Announced by the FDA

On Friday, the FDA also announced the recall of ice cream sold by Today’s Frozen Desserts, Inc. of Miami. This recall was classified as Class II due to the presence of undeclared food colorings Yellow 5 (Tartrazine) and Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF).

Additionally, a potato salad product produced by Lemonland Food Corp was classified as a Class I recall, which is the highest risk category, indicating that there is a “reasonable probability” that the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
