According to The Sun, A Walmart shopper recently expressed confusion after a store employee made bizarre comments about “throwing receipts away” during a return process. In a post on Reddit, the user shared their experience of being denied the return receipt, with the employee claiming it was “store policy.”
Reddit Post Sparks Debate
In the post, the shopper recounted their experience, stating:
“Does the return department take your receipt after you return an in-store item?” They explained, “I returned a lotion bottle and vinegar once, and the returns representative wouldn’t give me my receipt back, even when I told her I wanted it back.” The employee insisted that it was Walmart policy to dispose of the receipt.
This claim prompted fellow shoppers to criticize Walmart’s customer service, with many arguing that customers should always receive their receipts back when returning or exchanging products.
One user responded:
“Your receipt should come back to you, along with another receipt verifying the return. If they don’t give it to you, they are either not trained, dishonest, or just lazy.” Another user added, “It sounds like your store has a wrong rule.”
Another Frustrated Customer’s Experience
In a separate incident, another customer vented their frustration on Facebook after being denied a refund for faulty ink cartridges purchased from Walmart. The consumer claimed they lost nearly $100 due to the retailer’s policy.
The customer explained:
“At Walmart customer service, I gave the clerk my receipt and the returned box of cartridges. Apparently, there was a problem regarding the return of cartridges after thirty days. However, this was a $94 purchase, and due to their store policy with HP, they refused the exchange.”
The consumer reported receiving an error message when attempting to use the new cartridges in their printer. An employee informed them of the 30-day return policy on ink cartridges, but many social media users disagreed with Walmart’s decision.

One user questioned:
“Does this mean that a customer can no longer purchase cartridges in quantity?” The frustrated consumer added, “So just like that, I am out $94. The manager confirmed this and then dismissed me by walking away.”
Consumer Opinions on Return Policies
Numerous social media users supported the frustrated consumer’s stance, with one declaring,
“30 days is a ridiculous policy!!”
Walmart clarified that customers can check their purchase history on Walmart.com to see the latest eligible return or replacement dates. They also recommend keeping all manufacturer packaging and receipts for at least 90 days after making a purchase.
The retailer stated that damaged items can be returned for a refund or replacement at any Walmart store. Additionally, they promised that refunds for debit and credit card purchases would be processed within 10 business days.
